Anxiety, an emotion or a state when you are worried or feared about everyday situations.
In other words, when situations do not fall in place as per our expectations we stress about it. Nothing pleases us. Such situations and circumstances make us feel cranky, tired or uneasy.
As moms and caretaker of our family, it’s a common scenario where we struggle daily with anxiety. We are supposed to manage our house, children and family with perfection. But we are human beings and tend to get overwhelmed easily.
There are plenty of things to worry about in our everyday life. We have a huge workload at the office, have to look after our family, teach our children and maintain healthy relationships with our elders at home. In the process of taking care of our family and making their life easy, we ignore ourselves. We stop thinking about what things will give us happiness or what can we do for our good health. We don’t even realize that for well being and happiness of our family we have to take care of ourselves.
We feel anxious, depressed, overwhelmed and sometimes situations are not in our control. It becomes hard to cope with daily life. We silently suffer and sometimes are afraid or embarrassed to talk about it.
But we should not forget that we are not alone in this. There are a lot of women around us going through the same.
Let’s not forget- its just an emotion and we have the power to overcome it.
In my motherhood journey, I too struggled with anxiety. Motherhood is not something to learn. It comes naturally. So there were times, I made mistakes, engrossed in self-doubts and flooded with guilts.
And it’s perfectly okay.
Sometimes things do not turn out to be perfect. Situations are not in our favour, things do not happen as per our wishes, or we don’t get the expected results. So basically, below are some thoughts that trigger anxiety:
Am I doing things right?
Am I a good mom, wife, and daughter-in-law?
Am I ageing fast or not looking good?
Am I not feeding my kids well?
Am I taking good care of my family?
But soon I realized that to avoid all the stress and anxiety, I have to take myself as a priority. Only I have the power to overcome them. So, here is the list of some effective steps I have taken for myself to cope with stress and anxiety:
- I have started taking care of my physical health. For this, I eat healthy well- balanced meals and avoid junk, caffeine and cold drinks.
- Take plenty of sleep.
- Try to incorporate physical activity in my daily routine.
- Take a break whenever I feel stressed or tired.
- Spend time with my friends and family.
- Pamper myself or do a makeover.
- Indulge in hobbies.
- Follow time management. I prepare a to-do list and list them in order of my priority.
- Say ‘No’. Mostly we take up the responsibility of fulfilling everyone’s wishes in order to help and this turns up in stress.
- I started acknowledging my small accomplishments.
So ladies, make some time to re-connect with yourselves, let go of the negativity, feel gratitude with whatever you have and embrace all your imperfections.
