Breastfeeding is very essential and foremost nourishment for babies. It has been scientifically proved that the mother’s milk has lots of nutrients required for a baby’s growth and development. Hence, mothers have to be extra cautious while choosing their diet because it affects milk production.

Apart from a balanced diet breastfeeding moms should have special foods to improve and increase the production of milk. Including such foods in your diet is not only good for your overall health but increase lactation too.

When I was too struggling in my breastfeeding session, my elder’s advice helped me a lot. You all know well our Dadis and Nani’s nuskhe! The same knowledge was passed on to our mothers and mother in laws and then to us.

Here I am going to mention some seeds easily available in your kitchen which have been proved as a boon.

Fenugreek seeds: These seeds are used for ages to increase breast milk production. Soak some seeds in water overnight. Bring it to a boil and strain the seeds, drink the leftover by sipping it slowly. Also, you can grind and store in form of powder. Eat 1/2 tsp with a glass of water or mix in your curries and dals. Avoid if you are diabetic.

Fennel seeds: These seeds also help in boosting breast milk supply. They can be eaten raw or boil while preparing tea and consume it. You can also add them as a spice to flavour foods. Fennel seeds help in baby’s digestion and relieve in colic pains.

Cumin seeds: These are the best galactagogues or foods to stimulating breast milk production. Cumin seeds contain iron and essential mineral for nursing mothers. For best results, you can consume with warm water. Add in your curries and dals. They also aid in digestion and provide relief against gastric problems.

Chia seeds: These have galactagogue- beneficial for postpartum and lactating mothers as it enhances milk production. They are rich in antioxidants, fibre, Omega 3 fatty acid and other nutrients like protein, calcium etc. They can be eaten raw, just sprinkle some on your salad. Soak them overnight and use a gel-like soaked Chia seeds in your juices, smoothies, yoghurt and even oats.

Flaxseeds: Flaxseeds are an excellent source of protein, fibre, and omega-3 fatty acids. They have phytoestrogens that aid in breast milk production. Just sprinkle roasted flax seeds in your diet food. Avoid if you are diabetic.

Note: All the seeds are effective and considered safe to use while breastfeeding but moderation is the key. Fenugreek and flax seeds to be avoided by diabetic moms. Do keep an eye on the baby’s health at the beginning of any supplement-use.
